GEOCACHING
Last Summer I heard about geocaching for the first time. I thought it would be something that would be neat to try. Joined a website and never really looked at it again.
A couple weeks ago, someone mentioned it again so I bought an app for my iPhone and then looked at it almost everyday trying to work up the courage to actually try it. The two closest ones were right in town here. Both of private property, one in the yard of someone we know.
We had fun. LM led the way with my phone (built in GPS) and while we didn't dump out the cache to see what was in there (it was loaded to the top) we did sign the log book and take a picture and put it back where we got it. Wahoo, first cache completed. The initial scariness over. Next evening, cache 2. Another one on private property. The Smith family joined us to see what it was about. The kids had a hoot. We dumped it out and looked through all the stuff inside. I later found out that this cache was the first Manitoba cache. It was hidden February, 2001. Inside we found two trackables. One being The Rusty Nail which has been moving around since 2007 and wants to get to North Carolina. It was released in November, 2009. I went online and its had a little journey to say the least. It went from Texas to Alberta and then ended up in Killarney, MB. I don't want to place it just anywhere but can't hold on to it for long. The other one isn't as interesting but we'll help move it along.
LM really enjoys it and LP just goes with the flow. LM now wants to make his own cache so we've got our container together and got a log book and stuff. Now we just have to find a location. We have an idea but....
Our 3rd cache was a little trickier. I believe that the cache was moved. We searched according to the GPS but could not find it. The recent logs online gave new coordinates but I didn't have a pen to record them and re-enter them. Momma Smith found the cache in the bush. Nice little location located really close to home. I had no idea that little monument was even there.
With LM having camp this Summer which cost us $600.00 just for camp and not including hotels, fuel and food I was hoping to find some cheap entertainment for the Summer and this seems to be up our alley. We are having fun and hope to do a lot of them this Summer.
Anyone wanna buy me a handheld GPS?? I think I should also recap my Girl Guide skills and do learn to read a map again and use a compass. Good skills to have.
Anyways, its raining today so its a damn good time to get this house cleaned up before we start doing outdoor stuff again.
